20-year-old killed in knife brawl while celebrating his birthday in Hamilton


Before being killed in a deadly altercation on a central Hamilton street early on Sunday, July 20, a 20-year-old man was enjoying his impending birthday.

Given the volume of people and cars in the area during the violent altercation, police, who are investigating the man’s death as a homicide, have requested dashcam or mobile phone footage.

The setting for the violence

Later, reports released a sombre image: before the event started, a car full of young people with machetes and knives pulled up. The altercation turned into what the authorities described as a mindless act of violence as knives clashed.


Detective Sergeant Reece Durston detailed a grim early-morning scene that included forensic checks, cordoned-off streets, and a desperate search for anyone connected to the incident. Three people were injured in a brawl that started between two groups on Alexandra Street at around 12.10 am, and the guy passed away soon after being taken to the hospital.

The individual was “celebrating his upcoming birthday when a fight occurred with another group of people,” according to Detective Inspector Daryl Smith.
